How to choose backgrounds for demo videos
Use padding, colour, corners and shadows to frame a screen recording while keeping the interface easy to read.
Begin with the interface, then add a background
A background should help the viewer separate the recording from the page around it. Start with a quiet solid colour or gentle gradient and check that the interface remains the most noticeable part of the composition.
Screen Crisp includes solid colours, gradients and Windows wallpaper choices, and can use your own image. Use a brand background for a launch video or a simpler treatment for a detailed tutorial.
Keep padding useful
Padding creates space around the recording, but too much space makes controls and labels smaller. Compare the full composition at the size it will appear on your website before choosing a large border.
For detailed software instruction, prioritise legible text. A short promotional clip can use more space and motion because it usually explains fewer controls at once.
Use corners and shadows consistently
Rounded corners can soften the frame. A shadow can help it stand out from a background of a similar colour. Keep those settings consistent across related recordings so a series feels like one product.
Do not use a heavy shadow to compensate for a distracting image. Simplify the background first, then add only enough depth to make the edge of the recording clear.
Preview movement and close-ups
Check the background during zoom and 3D movement as well as in the opening frame. A strong pattern can compete with the moving screen, while an understated gradient tends to be easier to follow.
Watch the exported video at a small viewing size. If buttons or text are difficult to identify, reduce the padding, simplify the background or adjust the zoom focus.
